How To Get Rid of Squirrels in the Garden

Although they are adorable, squirrels can also be a major pest. They can destroy gardens and chew on almost everything. You can repel the annoying rodents and get rid of squirrels entirely from your property by using a variety of odors that they don’t like.

Smells They Don’t Like

Squirrels are picky when it comes to smell and their twitchy little noses cannot stand these odors.

Cider Vinegar

According to the Humane Society of the United States, squirrels dislike the smell of cider vinegar. Cider vinegar is a great way to keep squirrels away. Place clothes in cider vinegar, and then place them in an important part of your home such as the attic. If the clothes lose their strength, you will need to replace them with newer ones.

Spicy Odors

“Spicy” or “hot” smells can deter squirrels. Sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper flakes to keep unwanted pests away from your garden. Black pepper and garlic are also aversions of squirrels. This is also a problem for raccoons. Spray your pepper flakes with water before applying them to prevent them from escaping. You can apply as many times as you need. After it rains, you will need to apply again.

Distinctive Smell of Mothballs

Although the smell of mothballs may make us nostalgic for Grandma’s house visits, squirrels don’t like it. Mothballs may be able to save your squirrel problem, even if it’s only temporarily. Mothball smell can be very bothersome for people. You can get rid of squirrels by placing mothballs near your plants and in areas that are problematic to you, like the attic. These mothballs should be replaced every few weeks if their scent begins to fade.

Skunk-Like Smells

Like humans, squirrels don’t like things that smell skunky. Crown imperials can be used as a replacement for the skunky smell. The entire plant emits an unpleasant odor that is reminiscent of skunks. These plants are able to thrive in USDA plant hardiness zones 5-8. Crown imperials are effective in repelling squirrels, especially when they are located at a distance of several feet. Most crown imperial bulbs are easily available at local garden centers.

Animal Urine

Things that smell like urine are not liked by squirrels. These odors are often mimicked by many squirrel deterrent products. These products are usually available in spray form. Follow the instructions on the label for application and reapplication. If the smell of something is reminiscent of urine from a predator, a squirrel will not be able to resist it.

Hello, I’m Pete and I’m currently based in the west of Scotland, in a small place called Rosneath, where I’m exploring my garden adventures. I personally started gardening around 6 years ago and initially, I started out by growing my favorite fruits and berries, such as strawberries, Raspberries & Gooseberries. Since then I’ve added a lot of vegetables and working closely with my neighbor, it’s been a lot of fun.
