I made 24 pickings, defrostings, and store-raids, pulling in an average saving of nearly 95p each time.
Since my first saving of 2011, I have paid my allotment rent and bought some broad bean seeds, so it took until the 26th day to break even.
I also went through my seedbox this week, and thanks to last year’s reckless seed spending, I have most of what I need for the coming season. This should mean a bumper saving for 2011…
What I have needed to buy, I’ve managed to swap a la my 8 Ways to Get Free Seeds post. One kind person has sent me Autumn King carrots, and a packet of curly kale is currently en route to fellow GYO Forums user JellieBabe, author of Me and Two Veg.
I have found the price of veg interesting (a sentence I never thought I’d utter). I only saved 34p on 400g of potatoes for example, but over twice that on the same weight of squash.
Potatoes versus Squash
Potatoes are absolutely delicious when homegrown, but it does go to show that if you’re limited in space, then you might want to reconsider growing them. Squashes are more versatile than ‘tatoes, and keep longer. I saved over three quid on a crown prince, which contributed to three meals.
Leeks and Parsnips
Other big savings came from leeks and parsnips. I saved £.373 on leeks, and my only decent parsnips (that’s two because my parsnips are eternally rubbish) were worth £1.53 to me.
And thanks to my freezer, I pocketed a tidy sum on French beans. £1.04 might not sound a lot, but they’re out of season and expensive in the shops. A kilo at that price would have cost me £5.20.
At this rate, I could be on to save the best part of £270 by growing my own veg in 2011. I’ll update again next month, to see if my savings are still at this level as we head towards the hungry gap.
