A Patch From Scratch 2 – The Somerset Edition
We’ve been in our new Somerset home for nearly two weeks and whilst I wouldn’t say we’re sorted, we are managing to cook meals and drive to the local shop without using the satnav.
What we don’t have however, is access to the Internet. Lewis, now three and a half, is finding this unacceptable and has taken to marching around proclaiming that he ‘…NEEEEEDS the Internet!’. Oh how times have changed.
My wife and I also miss the Internet. I’m not ashamed to admit we love the Internet, and lack of Internet has made blogging and chatting on social media tricky, but much to my delight I have found a BT hotspot that just about covers the house. If you squeeze yourself in the corner of the conservatory, between the houseplant and yet-to-be-disposed-of dishwasher, you can get just about get a passable connection.Whilst the connection is playing ball, I thought I’d try and write a quick blog about future plans for growing veg.
Our house on a steep slope, which as well as making things entirely unchild friendly, it is also going to pose a new challenge for veg growing. There is also quite a lot of clearance required.
At the back of the garden is an old greenhouse, which is structurally fine and actually bigger than the one I had back in Essex. It needs a good tidy up and most panes are either broken or require replacing, but it is perfect serviceable and still holds chilli plants from the summer.
The good news is that alongside the greenhouse (behind the fence that was used to keep chickens in check) is an extra 12 feet or so of garden which will make a perfect space for some raised beds.
The bad news is that it is covered by large, unruly plants as well as 2-3 feet of something else that I can’t fathom – a sort of soil build up. There is also an awful lot of old tree, piles of weeds and general rubbish.
So, it needs clearing before I can even think about next year. I’m hoping that by Christmas we might be straight and I can start spending time in the garden with a skip and at least clear the area for further surveying. How quickly I can turn the space around I’m not sure, but A Patch From Scratch 2 – The Somerset Edition will soon be underway.
And the best thing about it is the view. This is going to be a terrific place to grow vegetables.
